1) Subhas Chandra Bose was one of the most prominent and highly respected leaders of the Indian independence movement against the British Raj.

Bose was elected president of the Indian National Congress for two consecutive terms but resigned from the post following ideological conflicts with Mahatma Gandhi. Bose believed that Mahatma Gandhi's tactics of non-violence would never be sufficient to secure India's independence, and advocated violent resistance. He established a separate political party, the All India Forward Bloc and continued to call for the full and immediate independence of India from British rule. He was imprisoned by the British authorities eleven times.

Subhas Chandra Bose was born in 1897 to an affluent Bengali family in Cuttack, Orissa in India. His father, Janakinath Bose, was a public prosecutor who believed in orthodox nationalism, and later became a member of the Bengal Legislative Council. Bose was educated at Ravenshaw Collegiate School, Cuttack, Scottish Church College, Calcutta and Fitzwilliam College at Cambridge University. Netaji was greatly influenced by the teachings of Swami Vivekananda, and adored Swami Vivekananda as his spiritural guru. In 1920, Bose took the Indian Civil Services entrance examination and was placed fourth with highest marks in English. However, he resigned from the prestigious Indian Civil Service in April 1921 despite his high ranking in the merit list, and went on to become an active member of India's independence movement. He joined the Indian National Congress, and was particularly active in its youth wing.

2) Chaitanya Mahaprabhu was a monk and social reformer of the 16th century Bengal, (present-day West Bengal and Bangladesh) and Orissa in India. Sri Krishna Chaitanya was a notable proponent for the Vaishnava school of Bhakti yoga (meaning loving devotion to Krishna/God) based on the philosophy of the Bhagavata Purana and Bhagavad Gita[3]. Specifically he worshipped the forms of Radha and Krishna and popularised the chanting of the Hare Krishna maha mantra. His line of followers, known as Gaudiya Vaishnavas, revere him as an avatar of Krishna in the mood of Radharani who was prophesised to appear in the later verses of the Bhagavata Purana.

According to beliefs and records of contemporaries Caitanya Mahaprabhu united in himself three aspects: ecstatic devotee of Krishna, inspired teacher of the love of Krishna, and Krishna himself in inseparable union with Radha. According to the biographies of 16th c. authors he has exhibited His Universal Form identical to that of Krishna on a number of occasions, notably to Advaita Acarya and Nityananda Prabhu. The followers of Advaita however consider Chaitanya a saint who attained his oneness with God, same like many before and after him.

3) Gopabandhu Dash (1877–1928) known as Utkal Mani (Gem of Orissa) was a defining social worker who excelled in the field of politics as well as literature.

Born on 9 October 1877, to mother Swarnamayee Devi & father Shree Daitari Dash in Suando Village, near Puri, Orissa, Gopabandhu was a legend on the Indian culture, spiritualism & service to mankind. He was an innate leader to serve people even at the cost of his family. At the age of twelve, he married a young girl Apti. The marriage did not stand in the way of his education. After completion of primary education, he joined Puri Zilla School in 1893, where he met his teacher Mukhtiar Ramachandra Dash, who was not only a genius but also a nationalist. They used to sit together and compare between eastern and western education. It was the place where nationalistic thoughts were incepted into his mind. The poor and inactive response of authorities for the victims of cholera after car festival provoked him to start a voluntary corps Puri Seva Samiti. This movement later led to establishment of a separate hospital for cholera patients at Puri. Gopabandhu's handling of the situation spread information about his disaster management abilities and love for the nation.

4) Kota Harinarayana was born in Berhampur, Orissa, in 1943 and graduated from BHU in Mechanical Engineering, post-graduate in Aero Engineering at IISc, Bangalore. He did his Ph.D. at IIT Bombay and also holds a bachelor’s degree in law.

He started his career in 1967 at HAL. He moved to DRDO HQ in 1970 till 1982 and held various positions. He rejoined HAL in 1982 as Chief Designer in Nasik Division. He was deputed to DRDO in 1985 and assumed charge as Director, ADE, Bangalore. He was appointed as LCA Programme Director in December 1985 and he was concurrently holding the post of Director, ADE till June 1986. During 1995 he was elevated as Distinguished Scientist by DRDO. As Programme Director and Chief Designer of Light Combat Aircraft, he successfully directed the project leading to flight testing and clearance for limited series production. Thanks to his efforts, India succeeded in developing a state-of-art, high technology fighter aircraft of world class.

He is the Fellow of Aeronautical Society of India (former President of the Society) and Indian National Academy of Engineering. He received distinguished alumnus award from Aerospace Department, IISc in 1993 and from IIT Bombay in 1995. He was awarded National Aeronautics Prize and FIE Foundation Award in 1996. He received SBI-Pragna Puraskar in 2001. He received the Dr. Y. Nayudamma Memorial Award for 2001. He received the DRDO Technology Leadership Award for 2001. He was honoured with Padma Shri by Government of India in 2002. He received Gujar Mal Modi Science foundation award for the year 2006.

5) Jayadeva was a Sanskrit poet, who lived in Orissa, circa 1200 AD. He is most known for his composition, the epic poem Gita Govinda, which depicts the divine love of the Hindu deity Krishna and his consort, Radha, and is considered an important text in the Bhakti movement of Hinduism.He was born in an Utkala Brahmin family.

Jayadeva was born in Kenduli Sasan (formerly Kendubilva), in the Prachi valley, Khurda district in Orissa. Kenduli Sasan is a village near the famous temple city of Puri. At the time of Jayadeva's birth, Orissa was under the rule of Ganga dynasty king Chodaganga Deva. It was during the reign of this monarch and his son and successor, Raghava, that Jayadeva composed his Sanskrit epics. Chodaganga Deva, originally a Shaiva, was strongly influenced by the devotion to Krishna in and around Puri and became a Vaishnava devotee of Krishna himself.

6) In 2004, Roopa Mishra became the First Oriya Lady as well as the First Married Lady of the country to top All India Civil Service Examinaton of 2003. Roopa Mishra, an MBA from Utkal University in Bhubaneshwar, had topped the 2003 Civil Services examination while Ms. Ashima Garg from Delhi University had stood second amongst the three lakh candidates who had applied for the 2003 Indian Civil Service Examination conducted by the Union Public Service Commission.

She has been selected in the Indian Administrative Service (IAS) in her home cadre of Orissa. She underwent her district training (2005-2006) as Assistant Collector at Mayurbhanj under Shri. V.K.Pandian, IAS, the District Magistrate and Collector of the district. She had also worked in the capacity of Block Development Officer of Khunta and as Tahsildar of Baripada during 1 year district training.

She brought back laurels again by winning the "Director’s Shield for being First in order of Merit of the IAS 2004 Batch" at Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration. This is an achievement for the best performance based on the marks obtained in the UPSC Examination, Foundation Course Written Examination and Assessment, Phase-I Written Examination and Assessment, Phase-II Assessment and District Training.

She was born in Angul, Orissa state on 9 June 1977 and went to various schools in Orissa. She completed her schooling from St. Joseph's Girls High School at Cuttack before studying in DAV Public School at Bhubaneswar. She went on to Ravenshaw College to study Science at the Intermediate Level before doing her Graduation in Commerce from Buxi Jagabandhu Bidyadhar (BJB) College in Bhubaneswar in 1998.

Daughter of bureaucrat Shri. Dandanirodh Mishra and academician Dr Usha Mishra, Ms. Roopa Mishra is the third IAS topper from Orissa. The other two toppers have been Shri. Hrushikesh Panda (in 1979) and Shri. Prafulla Chandra Mishra (in 1982). Roopa says she grew up in a very encouraging environment where she interacted with "leading people from every walk of life." Her husband Dr. Anshuman Tripathy, who is at the IIM Calcutta, encouraged her to take the examination after two years of marriage, which took place in 2000, after which Ms. Mishra had worked at the Directorate of Distance & Continuing Education of Utkal University for over a year before she decided to quit job and start preparing for this national level examination.

An Odissi Dancer since her childhood, Ms. Mishra achieved this feat in her first attempt itself and that too by having absolutely two new subjects (Psychology & Public Administration) for the examination.

7) Guru Kelucharan Mohapatra (January 8, 1926 - April 7, 2004) was a Indian classical dancer, guru and proponent of Odissi dance.

Kelucharan Mohapatra was born in Raghurajpur, a village near the temple town of Puri, Orissa, India. He learnt to paint, sculpt and play the khol drum at an early age. He started playing in folk theatre groups and Gotipua troupes from the age of nine. He married dancer Laxmi Priya with whom he often co-acted.

In 1994, he set up "Srjan", an organisation dedicated to train students in Odissi dance.

He kept healthy to his last days and kept performing despite a heart surgery. He died in Bhimtangi, Bhubaneshwar, Orissa.

8) Saurav Mohapatra is an Indian comic book writer based out of Massachusetts, USA. His credits include the Devi (#11 onwards), The Sadhu : "The Silent Ones" and Deepak Chopra's India Authentic from Virgin Comics

Born in 1978 in Khurda, India, Mohapatra attended the Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur and later emigrated to United States in 2000.

He is also the co-founder of Dimdim inc., an open source web conferencing company.

9) Sanjukta Panigrahi (24 August 1944 – 24 June 1997) was a dancer of India, who was the foremost exponent of Indian classical dance Odissi. Sanjukta was the first Oriya girl to embrace this ancient classical dance at an early age and ensure its grand revival.

In recognition of her contribution to dancing and associated activities, she was honoured with one of India's highest civilian awards the, Padma Shri (1975). She is also recipient of the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1976.

Apart from presenting Odissi performances in different parts of India, Sanjukta Panigrahi has been a part of Government’s cultural delegation to different countries, including to the USA and the Philippines (1969), United Kingdom (1983), Israel, Delphi International Festival in Greece (1989). She has also performed in France for eleven weeks, and participated there in the International Music Festival at Paris.

She was born on 24 August 1944 in Berhampur, Ganjam District, Orissa state, to a traditional Brahmin family of Orissa.

10) Satyanarayan Gangaram Pitroda, better known as Dr Sam Pitroda, born in Titlagarh, Orissa, is an inventor, entrepreneur and policymaker. Currently chairman of India's National Knowledge Commission, he is also widely considered to have been responsible for India's communications revolution [2]. He is the Chairman and CEO of World-Tel Limited, an International Telecommunication Union (ITU) initiative. He holds many key technology patents, has been involved in several startups, and lectures extensively around the world on management, governance and the implications of communications and information technology.

He is the founder and CEO of C-SAM, Inc, which has developed a suite of patented mobile transaction technology called OneWallet. The company has offices in London, Tokyo, and offshore development centres in India in Mumbai and Vadodara. He has served as an advisor to the United Nations and in 1992, his biography, 'Sam Pitroda: A Biography' was published, and became a bestseller on The Economic Times list for five weeks. Mr. Pitroda has lived mainly in Chicago, Illinois since 1964, with his wife and two children.

He was born in India in Titilagarh, Orissa.His parents hailed from Gujarat and migrated to Orissa. They were deeply influenced by Gandhi and his philosophy. Sam Pitroda and his brother were sent to Gujarat to imbibe Gandhian philosophy. Sam completed his schooling from Vallabh Vidyanagar in Gujarat and completed his Masters in Physics and Electronics from Maharaja Sayajirao University in Vadodara. After completing a Masters in Physics from Maharaja Sayajirao University in Vadodara he went to the US and did his Masters in electrical engineering from Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago.

11) Budhia Singh (born 2002) is an Indian boy and the world's youngest marathon runner. Generally considered an athletic phenomenon, Budhia has participated in (and finished) races of up to 60 kilometers (37.3 miles) in roughly six hours and thirty minutes.

Budhia's ability to run has led to a certain amount of celebrity status and he has appeared in a number of television commercials. These commercials and Budhia's fame have allegedly lead to significant financial gains on the behalf of the late Mr. Biranchi Das, Budhia's coach. Controversy over the nature of these gains had led to accusations of exploitation against Mr. Das and an official inquiry by Indian child welfare officials was launched 4 January 2006.

On 8th May 2006, a Government statement had ordered that he stopped running. The announcement came after doctors found the boy had "high blood pressure and cardiological stress"

On May 1, 2006, Budhia Singh from Orissa completed a record breaking 65 kilometer (km) run from Jagannath temple, Puri to Bhubaneshwar. He was accompanied by his coach Biranchi Das and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) jawans. This feat was registered in the Limca Book of Records.

12) Kalindi Charan Panigrahi (2 July 1901 – 15 May 1991 CE), was a noted Oriya poet, novelist, story writer, dramatist and essayist. He was one of the members of the Oriya literary group Sabuja Gosthi (the Green Group). Influenced by the romantic thoughts of Rabindranath Tagore, during the thirties when the progressive Marxist movements was in full flow in Oriya Literature, Kalindi Charan panigrahi, the brother of Bhagabati Charan Panigrahi,the founder of Marxist Trend in Orissa , formed a group circa 1920 called “Sabuja Samiti.” Along with two of his writer friend Annada Shankar Ray and Baikuntha Patnaik. Perhaps it was the very short existed period in Oriya Literature and later submerged with either Gandhian thoughts or Marxian thoughts. Later Kalindi Charan Panigrahi wrote his famous novel Matira Manisha, being influenced by Gandhism. He was for a period, the editor of English journals, Bhanja Pradipa and Mayurbhanja Chronicle.

His eldest daughter Nandini Satpathy was born in 1931 who later went on to become the Chief Minister of Orissa.His younger brother Bhagawati Charan Panigrahi was the founder of Communist party in Orissa. Bhagawati's great contribution for the Independence of India is under played in the history because he had been illigally imprisoned and slow poisoned by the British. Noted writer, awarded social activist and young political leader Suparno Satpathy is his great grandson.

He was honoured with the fellowship of Sahitya Academy in 1971 CE. In the same year, he was honoured with Padma Bhushan by Government of India. In 1976 CE, Sambalpur University conferred on him honorary D. Litt degree. In 1980 CE, he received award and citation from IFMA Trust.
